PUTTING ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL ON THE MAP

Geelong and Tarneit passengers will be among the first in Australia to trial designed to make public transport easier to navigate for people with accessibility needs.

The Allan Labor Government has launched an Australian-first trial of GoodMaps at Geelong, Tarneit and Bendigo stations.

GoodMaps is a wayfinding app designed to help passengers move through stations more easily and independently.

The app provides audio assistance and visual directions to key facilities, including platforms, bathrooms, information counters and coach bays.

It’s about making public transport easier to use for everyone.

Geelong and Tarneit were chosen because they are among the busiest stations on the V/Line network, and the three-year trial will help V/Line test how new technology can improve accessibility across the network.

GoodMaps is already being used on public transport networks around the world, including Canada and the UK – and it is free to download on the App Store and Google Play.

Staff at participating stations will continue supporting passengers and providing assistance when needed.

The trial builds on broader work to improve accessibility across the regional network.

Geelong Station includes a range of accessibility features, including lifts connecting all platforms, boarding assistance zones, accessible parking and communication access tools for passengers who need extra support.

The station also recently welcomed Travellers Aid services to help passengers navigate the busy station and connect with coach bays, taxis and drop-off zones.

Tarneit Station is one of the newest and most accessible stations on the V/Line network, with wide ramps and thoroughfares, tactile paving, lifts and wheelchair-accessible entrances across all platforms.

The Labor Government has also invested in more accessible VLocity trains, upgraded facilities for passengers travelling with mobility aids and support services through Travellers Aid.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams

“We’re trialling this technology at some of our busiest V/Line stations to see how it can improve the travel experience for passengers.”

“We’ve invested in accessible trains, upgraded stations and better support services – and we’ll keep getting on with making the network easier and more accessible.”

Quote attributable to Member for Geelong Christine Couzens

“Thousands of people move through Geelong Station every week and this technology will help make those journeys easier.”

Quote attributable to Member for Tarneit Dylan Wight

“GoodMaps will help make Tarneit Station easier to navigate and build on the accessibility improvements already being delivered in the west.”
