5 Essentials Your Winter Home Maintenance Checklist Should Include

Winter weekend cabin stays are increasingly becoming the norm for a large chunk of the population. Why sit inside your glass and steel office buildings when you can spend your time hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, or fishing in a cabin? But you still have to tend to your place while you're gone.

And that's where remote home monitoring can make all the difference. There's a whole winter home maintenance checklist before heading out for those long holiday weekends. Wondering what you need to keep an eye on while you're gone?

Here are the 5 essentials your winter home maintenance checklist should include.

1. Check Your Thermostat

Furnace and boiler breakdowns are a common risk during cold winter months and failures can lead to expensive repair costs. Checking the thermostat ensures it's working properly and accurate setting. If you have an old thermostat, you may consider replacing it with a modern, programmable one, which can save energy costs.

Also, pay attention to any bangs or clanking noises coming from the furnace or boiler, any changes in temperature, and notice if the unit is cycling off and on more than usual. Clean or replace dirty air filters if needed. Make sure all the vents and returns are clear of dust and debris.

2. Weatherproof Exterior Pipes

Winter can be a harsh season for your home, especially when it comes to exterior pipes. Having them wrapped in insulation will help protect them from freezing temperatures. Inspecting the pipes for damage and checking for cracks is also another important step.

3. Get Your Sprinkler System Blown Out

This involves having a professional come and disconnect the water from the system, then either use a high-pressure air compressor to clean the system or an air compressor to clean out any remaining water. This ensures that there will be no significant freezing water left and it prevents the pipes and other components from being damaged from freezing temperatures.

4. Bleed Your Radiators

Bleeding your radiators is one of the most important items on your winter home maintenance tasks, and can save you money in the long run. Bleeding your radiators involves releasing any air that may have been trapped inside the radiator, which can reduce the system's efficiency. It's fairly easy to perform the process and requires a radiator key and some rags.

5. Stock Up on Emergency Supplies

Winter weather can bring about natural disasters, such as floods, storms, and power outages. To protect yourself, your family, and your property during these times, it's essential to have supplies on hand that will help you survive and recover.

You should have a minimum of two weeks of food and water, flashlights, extra batteries, warm clothing and blankets, a first-aid kit, and if possible, a generator. If you live in an area prone to flooding, it's also a good idea to get a flood insurance quote to protect your home. Insurance can help you pay for repairs in the event of a flood.

Know What You Should Include in Your Winter Home Maintenance Checklist

A winter home maintenance checklist is essential for your home's safe and efficient operation. Some key items to include in your checklist are avoiding ice dams, bleeding radiators, and window safety inspections. Regular home maintenance can save you time and money in the long run.

Don't forget to maintain your home this winter! Schedule your checkup today to ensure it's winter-ready.
