Old Aussie Kitchen? Why You Need To Renovate It Immediately

If you have an old Aussie kitchen and have been considering a renovation then perhaps it’s time to get cracking. And when we mean “old” we mean anything built before the 21st Century. Yes, that might not seem like that long ago, but most kitchens before the 21st Century are replete with design, material and structural problems that need urgent rectification!

Here, we are going to list a few reasons why old Aussie kitchens simply have to go:

  1. They are generally unsightly

Look, we’re not saying that your kitchen was designed and built to be unsightly, but the wear of time may have taken its toll on its aesthetic. From fraying cabinets to filthy flooring, rotten ceilings and rusted fixtures, it is highly likely that your old kitchen has begun to look somewhat… foul.

But this is exactly what the awesome renovation is for: beautifying a space that currently deters you from even wanting to cook! Here, you install those elegant brass cabinet handles, essential fixtures and new appliances that are going to make your space look absolutely stunning.

  1. They often have layout problems

Kitchens weren’t a priority for most Australian home designs in the 20th Century. Unfortunately, this left many kitchen design layouts to be desired, with small spaces and even smaller preparation spaces designed in what were highly-dysfunctional designs. If you ever lived in a 20th Century inner-city townhouse then you will likely know exactly what we’re talking about.

And this, of course, is another reason why your old kitchen has to go. If preparing even the most basic of meals for yourself is a spatial nightmare then your renovation considerations are a good idea. A renovation will provide the space you need to create culinary wonders with ease!

  1. They are environmentally-inefficient

The old Aussie kitchen design didn’t think much of environmental efficiency. But of course! It was the 1960s, and the idea of having a sustainable home was unthinkable for at least another 40 years. Old appliances that used plenty of electricity, gas and water whilst avoiding any notion of recycling was the norm and this is another reason why a renovation should be considered.

Because, let’s face it: your kitchen could be playing a massive role in growing your carbon footprint. And a renovated kitchen will not only make your home more green - it will also massively reduce your electricity, gas and water bills!

  1. They often contain health hazards

Lead-based paint, outdated electronics, stifled stovetops - all of these combine to pose a myriad of kitchen health hazards to you and your loved ones. Just like energy-efficiency, the old Aussie kitchen wasn’t built with safety in mind. Well, not that it wasn't built with safety in mind, it was more that designers and builders were simply unaware of the danger that certain now-obsolete materials posed.

What’s more, many old appliances and electronics become dangerous after years of service, so renovating your kitchen will greatly increase its safety.

  1. They lower your home’s resale value

If you have a family with growing kids then you will want a kitchen with plenty of cooking space now. But, when the kids grow up they will be moving out, and you might find yourself wanting to downsize. When this is the case you will want to get the most out of your sale and a modern kitchen is perfect for upping your home’s resale value.

An old kitchen, conversely, does nothing but lower your home’s resale value whilst containing all those other aforementioned pitfalls.

For these reasons that old kitchen has simply got to go…
