Aurecon bolsters South Australian leadership to support major infrastructure growth

Asia Pacific design, engineering and advisory company Aurecon is reinforcing its investment into South Australia by announcing a wave of senior leadership appointments to steer its growing buildings portfolio.

The expansion signals a period of significant growth as the business continues to deliver some of the state’s most complex, city-shaping projects, including the recent $135 million all-electric Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

The appointments of Peter Burrows, Carla Lepore, John Duffy, and Derek Broome bring over a century of combined experience to the Adelaide Buildings team, bolstering Aurecon’s capability across healthcare, Defence, transport, and construction.

Aurecon’s Adelaide Buildings Leader, Corey McDonald, said the new hires were a deliberate investment in the state’s future.

“Maintaining growth in the property industry requires sustainable growth in its workforce,” McDonald said.

“At Aurecon, we invest early and build our team for security in the future. By making these strategic additions to lift our capability for clients locally and nationally, we’ve strengthened our leadership capacity across South Australia and Victoria.”

The expanded team is already driving a portfolio of landmark South Australian projects, including the $3.2 billion new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, major education projects and Defence infrastructure.

Leadership appointments

  • Peter Burrows, Technical Director, Buildings Mechanical, is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with 20 years’ experience across building projects within Australia and internationally. His new role at Aurecon focuses on maximising asset performance for the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and continuing work on Flinders Medical Centre and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Burrows said: “I believe in giving back to help build a skills legacy here, so I’m looking forward to mentoring the next generation of engineers through our graduate program.”

  • Carla Lepore, Technical Director, Delivery Management, is a specialist in commercial management for large-scale design with over 20 years’ experience. Lepore said: “Being born and raised in Adelaide, I am passionate about projects that have a lasting impact on South Australia. Having already contributed to the New Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Future Submarine Project, I am proud to now support the new Women’s and Children Hospital.”

  • John Duffy, Technical Director, Buildings, returns to Aurecon as a Chartered Electrical and Building Services Engineer. Bringing 18 years’ experience across transport, health, laboratory, aviation, commercial, and mixed-use developments, John is a trusted advisor for net-zero sustainability, digital engineering and infrastructure planning.

  • Derek Broome, Director, Precincts, Aviation and Stadia, brings 30 years’ experience shaping and delivering city defining precincts, stadia, aviation and major infrastructure projects across Australia and internationally. Derek started his career as an engineering apprentice, before moving into leadership. He is recognised for leading transformational national and international projects, including the $535 million Adelaide Oval redevelopment.

The expansion of the senior team, combined with Aurecon’s Graduate Program and collaboration with Adelaide University, reinforces the business’ continued investment in South Australia.

Aurecon’s Managing Director South Australia and Victoria, Adolfo Fernández Benito, said “Investing in leadership in South Australia is part of our commitment to supporting our clients with the expertise required to deliver projects and support the region’s growth.”

Aurecon remains at the forefront of engineering excellence, with recent projects such as Modbury Hospital, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre, and the Technical College in Mount Gambier already contributing to over 1,000 additional hospital beds and 1,500 technical college student places across the state.
